Art on the LA River: Native Plant Exploration and Cyanotype Creation

Join Friends of the LA River for a hands-on summer experience that brings together art, ecology, and community. FoLAR’s Summer Art Series is a new arts-based program inspired by our celebrated field trip model. These 120 minute sessions invite students to explore the Los Angeles River through nature walks, creative workshops, and visits to working artist studios near the River. Each session is grounded in the River’s history, science, and vibrant cultural landscape.
Led by educators and local artists, the program gives students the chance to reflect on the River, learn about environmental stewardship, and explore creative careers in their own community. Participants will create original art inspired by the ecology and spirit of the River.
Please note: This is not a drop-off program. A parent or guardian must remain present during the session.
June 27: Native Plant Exploration and Cyanotype Creation
This field trip will focus on observing and identifying the parts of the River that make it special, and the parts of our ecosystem that we need to help protect. The students will learn about the transfer of energy through a food web and how the same energy from the sun can be used to make a print through creating a cyanotype (an early form of photography). They’ll identify native plants and use them to create their own prints to take home.
