After moving to Reseda in the San Fernando Valley, teen Danny LaRusso becomes the target of a local gang of karate students. He finds an unexpected mentor in his quiet building manager, Mr. Miyagi, a role that garnered a Supporting Actor nomination for Noriyuki “Pat” Morita. The Karate Kid was wildly popular upon its release; it was one of the highest grossing films of 1984 and became an iconic film of the early 1980s that spawned numerous sequels, a remake, and a TV series that reunited the cast of the original film more than thirty years later.
