Time to Play at the Tulsa Children's Museum Discovery Lab in Oklahoma

By Meg Brunson

The Discovery Lab in Tulsa, OK is tucked away enough that you could actually miss it even if you know where to look for it, although there’s plenty of parking around - even for a truck towing a 36’ trailer.

We were fortunate enough to visit on the anniversary of the first moon landing, so outside there was an interactive experiment set up that introduced incoming children to space travel through building canister rockets and launching them. The kids loved the experiment and watching their rockets fly through the air. The staff manning this station was amazing with the kids - kind, patient, and funny.

The fun continued inside with a tape slide...yes, you read that correctly, there was a slide made out of packing tape. It may not be the fastest slide, but it sure was cool! There were some tunnels made out of tape as well - it was really fun for the kids to experience such an innovative use of materials. The play structure offered plenty of tunnels and climbing opportunities!

Within the main hall there are also a variety of other exhibits offering the kids opportunity to make music with pipes and a paddle, and playing with scarves and fans to blow them up in the air. There was also an area for babies and toddlers - my kids are past that stage now, but I always appreciate that there is something for everyone!.

There was an exhibit focused on building during our visit, and the kids all loved building houses, forts, and other structures with the large brick-like blocks, while wearing their hard hats.

The workshop was featuring a moon-themed craft and the kids enjoyed designing their own flags to plant on the moon!

During the visit we were also lucky enough to catch a science demonstration in the main hall. The staff member who led the demo was one of the staff who had previously been outside with the rocket experiment. The kids all sat and watched with amazement as he demonstrated more rocket science experiments and entertained them with his stories and explanations. My husband and I were convinced that he is/was a teacher - he was just so amazing with the kids!

We loved the time we spent at the Tulsa Children's Museum and if you're in the Tulsa area and have a child who is middle school aged or younger, you should definitely plan a visit!  Learn more about their hours, admissions, directions, parking, and current exhibits at https://discoverylab.org
